Super Robot Wars Y Producer Confirms It's A Standalone Game
Ever since Bandai Namco revealed the full series list for Super Robot Wars Y, many fans are expecting a SRW Y 2 to be announced with follow-up series like Gundam The Witch From Mercury Season 2 and Gundam Seed Freedom.
However, SRW Y producer Toma Kota already denied these theories and clearly stated the game will be standalone.
The August 9, 2025, live stream for Super Robot Wars Y had a segment with the game's seiyuu reading questions from fans. One of these questions asked: "Seeing SRW Y includes several series with second seasons or sequel movies, is it possible that the game will have some sort of sequel, similarly to what happened with SRW F and SRW F Final in the past?".
Producer Toma Kota answered that SRW Y is a standalone game whose story is properly wrapped up in the game itself.
In the same stream, TomaP also explained that for example, the story of Gundam The Witch From Mercury will diverge from the anime starting the first appearance of the Gundam Aerial Rebuild. He didn't go into details to avoid spoilers and asked fans to play the game and discover the story by themselves.
Switching Engines Delayed SRW Y Considerably And Prevented It From Including Recent Series
On the April 20 2025 live stream, producer Toma Kota explained that they started planning for a new SRW game right after SRW 30 was released on October 28 2021. However, they first had to change engines in order to ensure the smooth future of the series. He explained that until now they've been using the same SRW-specialized engine for over 20 years. Switching engines took them quite a while, hence why there aren't any recent series in SRW Y.
(It looks like Bandai Namco privated that stream on youtube so I cannot link it to you. You'll have to take my word for it.)
(Over the years in past live streams and on the Super Robot Wars radio show, ex-producer Terada also explained negotiations for including a series in SRW can be much more difficult than we can imagine. He mentioned how whenever you look at a SRW game's series list, and think "woah, imagine if this series would have been in this game, it would have fit in so well", they definitely thought the same thing too and wanted to include that series, but couldn't for various reasons.)
In early August 2025, Bandai Namco held a demo event for Japanese outlets. The event also included a Q&A with producer Toma Kota. At that time, producer Toma specified that they were using the previous engine since Super Robot Wars Alpha released in May 2000 (meaning they were using it since as far as 1999), and that the new engine they switched to is Unity. The mobile game SRW DD, celebrating its 6th anniversary this August 21, also runs on Unity, so I assume it made things easier for the console team and DD team to work with each other (maybe they already were and there's only one team working on both games, I don't have specific details regarding how they're organized).
It's unlikely the series will ever go back to its release schedule of 1-2 games a year as it was the case from the 90s up to early 2010s, seeing how the game industry has changed considerably. However we definitely won't have to wait another 4 years for the next game. That's overall what Producer Toma said at the Q&A according to Kadokawa-owned outlet Dengeki.
Personally speaking I can't wait for what comes next, as it'll definitely include popular series like Seed Freedom and Bravern. Seeing how good the story in SRW Y seems (I barely played it for now), I can't wait to see how series will be used and meshed together in future games. I'm also still hoping to see Pretty Rhythm / King of Prism in a Super Robot Wars game one day. It's not fair Aikatsu got in Cross Omega but Pretty Rhythm didn't.
