Thank God They Aren't Making A Super Robot Wars Cards Roguelite (Yet?)

Short talk about the Battle Rush puzzle mode in Super Robot Wars Y.

Thank God They Aren't Making A Super Robot Wars Cards Roguelite (Yet?)

I need to hurry and get rich via games journalism (Gakumas Fujita's initial story pitch "I'm gonna get rich being an idol" levels of Delsaber) so I can make the Melrose Place mecha anime remake and its tie-up game adaptation before they pass a law stating every game must be a cards roguelite.

Now that we're done with the Nonsenseだわ: Bandai Namco announced the first paid DLC for Super Robot Wars Y launches on November 21, 2025. I detailed the DLCs in my summary of the game's final live stream pre-release.

Super Robot Wars August 19 2025 Live Stream Summary
Gundam Seed Freedom, Daimos and Yuusha Seisen (The Saint of Braves) Baan Gaan in Super Robot Wars DD, SRW Y DLC, and various comments from producers Matsumoto and Toma Kota.

Moreover, a new game mode called Battle Rush will be added with the version 1.1.0 update on Nov 19. In this mode, players deploy five units and aim to defeat 10 Waves of enemies. You need to clear each Wave in a single Ally Phase in order to progress to the next Wave, and your units don't recover any resources in-between Waves.
Battle Rush is always the same regardless of which difficulty you're playing on. The mode unlocks once you reach Chapter 6. You'll obtain unique rewards the first time you manage to clear a specific Wave.

God at first I was so scared watching the trailer lol, I was expecting cards to show up in-between Waves. Rather than a roguelite, this is more like a survival mode and a throwback to puzzles modes like the one in SRW J. It's not like I played every single SRW game so I forgot/don't really know which other SRW besides J had similar puzzle modes, if any.

I kinda like this kinda stuff. "We're throwing you into this situation, do everything you can to resolve it". I wouldn't play a whole game like that, but a bonus mode like this is nice. And personally these types of modes always reminds me of the original Sim City. With how you could start a playthrough in a specific scenario in a specific city. Like, City X in Country Y right after the historically devastating floods that happened on Year Z.

I don't think Bamco will ever make a Super Robot Wars roguelite game as it would go against one of the core values of the series: standing together and growing together with your favorite robots and characters. I wouldn't like a SRW like that, as I hate most roguelites especially deck builders. Though I do play games with similar elements such as Gakumas, which is in a way "deck builder roguelite x raising sim". There's another game like that I'm really looking forward to called Ice on the Edge.

Oh and that new fairy character called Iris, who acts as a whimsy guide for Battle Rush, looks pretty cute. And she got visible freckles. Really cute and cool design, color scheme is really cool too with the blue eyeshadow.

I'm calling Iris "new" but I actually still haven't played SRW Y past the demo so I dunno if she's a brand new OG chara made for Battle Rush or already appeared in the main story. Come to think of it, there was an OG chara fairy like that in SRW 30 too right.

But yeah I just really like her style, I wonder who's the chara designer. Maybe Kouno Sachiko. I can't tell. It kinda looks like Yatsufusa Tatsunosuke too (who is still drawing Super Robot Taisen OG - The Inspector - Record of ATX - BAD BEAT BUNKER. Still one of the funniest names years later, only rivaled recently by Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS Gun Blaze Vengeance. The manga has an irregular schedule so it spent several years in Earth Cradle and now they started the final battle against the Inspectors and Shadow Mirror around 2-3 years ago I think?).

We'll probably have to wait till the next official artbook to know the answer. This reminds me of one of the SRW live streams in late 2022 or early 2023, when they announced the Watanabe Wataru SRW artbook released in May 2023. They were talking about the chara design of ハーズ / Hers (the mysterious, tall, thin silver elf-like OG lady in SRW DD) and Terada said something like "if we ask Watanabe to draw thin women he can actually do it" loooooool was really funny. Never made an article about that stream or most of the ones that happened in between 2022-2024 sadly.

Anyway thanks for reading bye. I need to go back to writing political articles in Japanese that no one will read, talking about how White the game industry and games media are. Will be published here too when I'm done insha Allah. Will be a sequel to this article.
